The mulefoot hog is a critically endangered species. As of 2006, there were fewer than 200 purebred hogs documented. Here at Goose Grapery, promoting and preserving endangered breeds is especially important to us because we recognize the importance of diversity. While large farms prioritize the sale of specific breeds that are produced quickly, we believe that the slow food movement is beneficial because it allows more diversity not only in the animal population, but also in the food we consume. By promoting the sale of and creating a demand for mulefoot hogs and their uses, we believe that other farms will become more interested in raising them, thus leading to the growth of their population. Without creating a market for these animals, they simply will not survive.
Goose Grapery hogs are raised on a 10 acre pasture of natural grasses. They regularly forage insects and mesquite beans. They are provided with fruits and vegetables, which they eat to their heart's delight. We only supplement their diet with locally bought grains when necessary. In the case of inclement weather, our hogs are also provided with a heated shelter where they can rest comfortably.
We raise our hogs to be gentle creatures. Our male, Wilbur, is from a long bloodline of hogs that are known to be even more docile than the average mulefoot. The two females in our breeding stock, Petunia and Miss Piggy, are from a different line than Wilbur to ensure genetic diversity.
We are currently only selling live animals. Individual cuts of meat will be sold at a later date.

Mulefoot hogs are known for their superior taste. Their meat is more moist and has better flavor than pork from factory farms. Many describe mulefoot pork as "unforgettable". It is freckled with marbling, melts in your mouth, and would make a great addition to your next dinner.
