Chickens and Other Fowl

Birds of a Feather

Goose Grapery is filled with birds of many varieties, from geese to ducks to chickens. Our birds are free-range and eat the insects found in the grasses, which means we don't have to use insecticides to maintain our grounds. They are natural fertilizers, which helps ensure green grass is growing for all the animals to enjoy. They also keep our land and pigs pest-free, which benefits the whole farm.

Since our philosophy is to treat animals as humanely as possible, our birds are free-range and pasture-raised. They eat grasshoppers, crickets, and other insects, and their diet is only supplemented with locally bought grains when necessary. Every night our birds are kept in a hen house to protect them from local predators such as coyotes. Though it never gets terribly cold in South Central Texas, our hen house can be heated to keep our birds comfortable.

Currently we have an assortment of birds, but intend to replace them with heritage breeds.

Our egg-laying birds include chickens, geese, and ducks.

Our chicken eggs range in color from white to brown to green, and range in size from medium to extra-large. They are available year-round (A dozen for $3).

White geese eggs are only available once a year in late spring (3 for $10) .

White duck eggs are periodically available (A dozen for $5).

Free-Range vs. Store-Bought Eggs

Any farmer will tell you that the difference between free-range and store-bought eggs lies in their nutritional value. Research shows that free range eggs are more vibrant in color and richer in nutrients. Typically local farms treat their chickens more humanely than factory farms, which not only makes local farms the more nutritional choice but also the more ethical one.
